Ionic Columns, Pedestals, Pillars and Bases
Ionic Columns, Pedestals, Pillars and Bases
Classic Greek Ionic columns, pedestals, pillars and table bases. Ionic columns are one of the three original orders of classical architecture, the other two being Doric and Corinthian. Originating in the mid-6th century BCE in Ionia, Ionic columns where commonly used in great temples. Unlike Doric columns, Ionic columns normally stand on a base which separates the shaft of the column from the platform. The capital of the Ionic column has characteristic paired scolling volutes that are laid on the molded cap of the column. The Ionic column is typically more slender than the Doric, giving it a more graceful look. Examples of Ionic columns can be seen far and wide on libraries, courts of justice, castles and wherever you find learning and culture.
