Persephone, daughter of the Greek Earth Goddess, Demeter was abducted by the lord of the Underworld, Hades to become his bride.
Demeter, heartsick with grief refused to heat the earth thus casting the world into an eternal winter. Zeus, father of the gods got involved and made a compromise. Peresphone would stay with Hades half the year, and return to her mother the other half. As the time grows closer to the reunion of mother and daughter, Demeter allows the world to begin to warm and spring begins.
